Why Summer is the Smartest Time to Start Tattoo Removal

Summer has a way of making everything feel more visible: the sun, the skin, the ink you've been covering up with long sleeves since October. Maybe you've been telling yourself you'll take care of that tattoo "eventually." But as temperatures climb and tank tops come out, "eventually" starts to feel more urgent. You're not alone. Every summer, more people take the first step toward removing or fading ink that no longer feels like them.

Here's the thing: most people don't expect that summer is actually one of the best times to start laser tattoo removal. Not in spite of the season, but because of it. This post breaks down exactly why, what to expect during the process, and how to protect your skin to get the best possible results.

Why Summer Changes Everything

The Motivation Is Real, and It's Worth Acting On

There's nothing quite like the approach of swimsuit season to clarify how you feel about a tattoo. The one you could ignore under a winter jacket suddenly becomes the one you're staring at in the mirror before every beach trip.

That feeling of wanting to be comfortable and confident in your skin isn't vanity. It's a completely valid reason to make a change. And acting on that motivation while it's fresh means you're far more likely to follow through with the full treatment plan, which is key to getting real results.

Starting now also means that with a consistent treatment schedule, you could see meaningful fading before summer's end and enter the next season with noticeably clearer skin.

Your Schedule Actually Works in Your Favour

Laser tattoo removal sessions are spaced 8-12 weeks apart to allow your skin to heal and your body to flush out fragmented ink. That means you're not coming in every week. You're coming in every two or three months.

For many people, summer schedules are more flexible. Whether you're a student, a teacher, a freelancer, or someone who takes time off in the warmer months, you're more likely to have the availability to book appointments, plan around them, and actually keep them.

Sticking to your session schedule is one of the most important factors in how quickly you see results. Summer gives many clients the time and headspace to stay consistent.

You Can Plan Around the Moments That Matter

Summer is full of events: weddings, family reunions, beach vacations, and outdoor festivals. The good news is that with proper planning, tattoo removal fits easily around all of it.

Book your sessions at least two weeks before any big event. By then, any post-treatment redness or swelling will have resolved, and you'll be well into the healing phase. Many clients schedule their sessions for the beginning of the month and use the rest of the time to enjoy their summer, completely unrestricted.

What Laser Tattoo Removal Actually Involves

If you're new to this, here's a straightforward look at how the process works. No jargon, no overselling.

Three Wavelengths, One Reason: Your Ink Is Not All the Same

Different ink colours absorb different wavelengths of light. Some inks respond to one wavelength, but not another. That’s why a single-wavelength laser can remove black ink but struggle with green: it’s not about power, it’s about physics.

At NIXX, we use PicoSure’s two core wavelengths:

  • 755 nm — the primary wavelength, effective on black, blue, and green inks that sit deep in the skin.
  • 532 nm — suited to warmer pigments: certain reds, oranges, and yellows.

Together, these two wavelengths cover the majority of tattoo ink colours encountered in practice. For clients with deeper melanin-rich skin tones where 1064 nm becomes the safer choice, that wavelength is available through our Hollywood Spectra, which is part of why having both systems matters. Part 3 of this series covers how we decide which laser, or combination of lasers, fits your tattoo and skin tone.

In reality, the wavelength isn’t chosen just once for the whole tattoo. It’s picked for each section and colour, based on how your skin responds. This isn’t a sales tactic. It’s simply how science works, and why a proper in-person assessment changes what's possible.

The colour-specific claims here aren't just technical theory. Peer-reviewed research published in journals including the Archives of Dermatology and Lasers in Surgery and Medicine has documented PicoSure's clearance of blue, green, and yellow inks: colours that older lasers often can’t remove. PicoSure has been the subject of over 26 published clinical studies, which is more documented validation than most laser systems in this space can claim.

What PicoSure Gives a Technician to Work With

The short pulse is the key feature, but what really matters is the control PicoSure gives during each session.

Variable spot sizes let the technician work precisely: tighter on small, detailed areas, wider on larger fields,  without over-treating skin that's already been hit in a previous pass. Adjustable fluence settings mean the energy level can be pushed on dense, stubborn ink or dialled back where the skin needs more cautious handling. For ink that resists standard settings entirely, PicoSure includes a boost mode that further shortens the pulse width, applying more concentrated force to recalcitrant pigment without simply cranking up the heat. Wavelength flexibility means the right option for each pigment can be selected mid-session rather than locked in at the start.

All this technology only works if the person using it knows what they’re doing. A powerful laser in the wrong hands won’t give better results: it can actually cause more skin damage. The equipment sets the limit, but the technician decides what results you get.

The Technology Makes a Real Difference

At NIXX, we use a dual-laser approach that most clinics simply can't offer. Our two systems, PicoSure and Hollywood Spectra, work together to address a wider range of tattoo types, ink colours, and skin tones than either laser could handle alone.

  Precision Technology

PicoSure

PicoSure fires in picoseconds — trillionths of a second — shattering ink into particles small enough for your body to clear faster. It excels on stubborn colours like blue and green, and delivers results with less thermal damage to surrounding skin. Fewer sessions. Cleaner clearance.

  Versatile Power

Hollywoood Spectra

Hollywood Spectra is a multi-wavelength Q-switched Nd:YAG laser that is highly effective on black, red, and darker ink tones across a range of skin types. Its versatility makes it the right choice when precision targeting across multiple wavelengths will produce the best outcome for your tattoo.

Together, these two systems allow us to build a treatment plan that's truly tailored to your tattoo. Not a one-size-fits-all approach, but a strategy matched to your specific ink, your skin, and your goals. That's a meaningful advantage over clinics working with a single laser.

What Sessions Feel Like

Most clients describe the sensation as similar to a rubber band snapping against the skin. It's not painless, but it's brief and very manageable. We use a cooling device during treatment to reduce discomfort, and sessions typically last only a few minutes, depending on the tattoo's size.

You won't be laid up for days. Most clients return to their normal routine the same day.

How Many Sessions Will You Need?

This is one of the most common questions, and the honest answer is: it depends. Factors that affect the number of sessions include:

  • Tattoo size and location: Larger tattoos and areas with less circulation (like hands and feet) typically take longer
  • Ink colours: Black and dark inks respond fastest; bright colours like yellows and light blues take more sessions
  • Ink density and age: Older, faded tattoos often respond more quickly than fresh, heavily saturated ones
  • Your skin type: Our dual-laser setup means we can treat a broader range of skin tones safely and effectively
  • Your goal: Fading for a cover-up requires far fewer sessions than complete removal

Most clients require
6 to 12 sessions for full removal, spaced 8 to 12 weeks apart. During your free consultation, we'll assess your tattoo and give you a realistic estimate specific to your ink and your skin.

Sun and Skin: The Rules You Need to Know

This is where summer requires a bit of extra care, and it's worth taking seriously.

Before Your Session: Protect the Area

Treated skin and sun don't mix well. For at least six weeks before each appointment, keep the tattooed area out of direct sunlight. Tanned or sunburned skin is more reactive to laser energy, which increases the risk of hyperpigmentation (dark patches) or blistering.

If you're spending time outdoors, cover exposed skin with clothing, a bandage or apply broad-spectrum
SPF 60+ sunscreen every day. This single step makes a significant difference in how well your skin responds to treatment.

After Your Session: The Same Rules Apply

Post-treatment skin is healing and especially vulnerable to UV damage. For the weeks following each session:

  • Keep the treated area fully covered when outdoors.
  • Apply SPF 60+ sunscreen daily, without exception.
  • Skip the pool and ocean for at least 48 hours, or until any blistering has completely resolved. Chlorine, saltwater, and bacteria can irritate healing skin and increase the risk of infection.
  • Don't pick or scratch any scabbing or peeling. Picking can cause scarring and significantly slow down your results.

Your skin is doing a lot of work between sessions. Protecting it properly means it can focus on flushing out ink rather than repairing sun damage.

How to Prepare for Your First Session

Getting ready for laser tattoo removal doesn't require much, but a few simple steps make a real difference in your results.

  1. Stay out of the sun. This is the most important preparation step, and it starts 6 weeks before your appointment.
  2. Hydrate your skin. Well-moisturized skin responds better to laser treatment and heals faster. Drink plenty of water and apply a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer to the area daily in the weeks leading up to your session.
  3. Avoid harsh skincare products. In the few days before your appointment, skip exfoliants, retinoids, self-tanners, and any other active skincare products on the tattooed area. These can irritate the skin and increase sensitivity.
  4. Skip blood thinners if possible. Avoid aspirin, ibuprofen, and alcohol in the 24 hours before your session, as these can increase bruising. If you take prescribed medications, don't stop them. Just mention it during your consultation.
  5. Come in clean. Show up with clean skin, free of lotions or makeup on the treatment area.

Who Is Summer Tattoo Removal Right For?

Almost everyone with an unwanted tattoo is a candidate, but here are the situations where clients tend to find the most value by starting during the warmer months.

You Want Confidence at the Beach or by the Pool

If a tattoo has been making you self-conscious about showing skin, removing it gives you the freedom you've been missing. Starting now means real, visible progress before next summer.

You're Thinking About a Cover-up

Laser fading (not full removal) is one of the best tools for achieving a great cover-up. Lightening an existing tattoo creates a cleaner, more neutral canvas, giving a tattoo artist far more creative options. Our team's background in tattoo culture means we understand exactly how much fading will work best for your specific cover-up plans.

Your Tattoo is Affecting How You Show Up Professionally

Tattoos on hands, forearms, and necks can create friction in certain professional environments. If you've been covering yours up for work, removing it gives you one less thing to think about.

You're Moving On From Something

A name, a relationship, a version of yourself you've outgrown. For many clients, tattoo removal is less about aesthetics and more about moving forward. There's no wrong reason to want your skin back.

The NIXX Difference

NIXX Tattoo Removal isn't a generic laser clinic. Our technicians come from a tattooing background, which means they understand ink, skin, and the culture around body art in a way most removal providers simply don't.

We know that every tattoo has a story. We're not here to judge yours. Not only that, but we're here to help you write the next chapter.

Our dual-laser setup (PicoSure + Hollywood Spectra) means we're not guessing which tool might work for your ink. We're choosing the right one with intention. Every treatment plan is customized to your tattoo, your skin type, and your goals, whether that's full removal or a strategic fade for a cover-up.

Your first step is a
free consultation. We'll look at your tattoo, answer every question you have honestly, and give you a realistic picture of what to expect, including how many sessions you'll need, how much fading to anticipate, and what your skin will look like along the way.

No pressure. No commitment. Just clear information so you can make the right decision for yourself.
