What Actually Makes a Tattoo Scary? This October, Enter NIXX's Scariest Tattoo Contest!

Some tattoos are scary on purpose. A skull, a horror film portrait, a hyper-realistic spider crawling up a forearm. Those are intentional. Those take skill. Those are not what we're talking about.
We're talking about the other kind of scary. The tattoo you can't stop thinking about. The one you cover before job interviews, avoid looking at in the mirror, and quietly hope nobody notices. The one that has a story behind it, and not the kind you want to tell.
That tattoo. That's what NIXX is looking for.
In honour of Halloween, NIXX Tattoo Removal is running a Scariest Tattoo Contest, open to residents of British Columbia. One winner walks away with a free consultation and a free laser removal session. But before we get to the rules, we want to talk about what makes a tattoo genuinely scary, because the answer is more nuanced than most people expect.
What Makes a Tattoo "Scary"? Insights From The Team Who Knows Ink
Most articles about bad tattoos offer the same recycled list: misspellings, ex-partner names, tribal armbands. That's not wrong, but it's surface-level. At NIXX,
our technicians come from a deep background working in the tattoo industry. They understand ink, placement, technique, and skin. When they see tattoos clients want removed, certain patterns recur.
Here is a more honest taxonomy of what makes a tattoo truly scary.
The Technical Disaster
This is the category that haunts people the most, because it's not their fault.
A
blowout occurs when a needle is pressed too deep, pushing ink past the dermis and into the subcutaneous fat layer beneath. The result is a blurred, bruised-looking shadow around the edges of the design. Lines that should be crisp look smudged. Outlines bleed outward. No amount of time will fix it, because the ink has settled into tissue that isn't designed to hold it cleanly.
Ink migration is a related issue that appears more gradually. Certain inks, particularly low-quality pigments, spread through the skin over time. A design that looked acceptable in the first year slowly warps until it bears little resemblance to what was placed.
Uneven saturation
is the technical failure that sneaks up on clients. When ink density varies significantly across a fill area, the tattoo develops an uneven, patchy appearance that worsens as it ages. Bold patches fade faster than dense ones. What was meant to be solid black becomes a mottled grey map.
These failures come from inexperience, improper technique, or equipment that isn't suited to the work. They are genuinely difficult to see coming and among the most common reasons people seek removal.
The Portrait Gone Wrong
Portrait tattoos are among the most technically demanding work in the medium. When they succeed, they are breathtaking. When they don't, they produce some of the most unsettling images a person can carry on their body permanently.
The margin for error in human likeness is extraordinarily small. A slight shift in the proportions of the eyes, a misreading of shadow across the nose, an incorrect relationship between the mouth and the chin, and the result tips into what researchers call the
uncanny valley: a likeness close enough to be recognizable but wrong enough to feel deeply unsettling. The brain registers the face as almost right, which registers as disturbing rather than comforting.
Portrait work requires an artist who has studied facial anatomy, who understands how black-and-grey shading reads on skin as opposed to paper, and who has the experience to know that what looks correct as a stencil will shift once transferred to a curved, living surface. When those skills aren't present, the result can transform a beloved face into something that bears only a passing, troubling resemblance to the intended subject.
Canada ranks among the top five countries globally for tattoo dissatisfaction, with over 90,000 annual searches related to tattoo removal or correction, according to a study
cited by Now Toronto. Portrait work and name tattoos consistently appear as leading contributors to that dissatisfaction.
The Design That Didn't Survive Placement
A tattoo that looks striking in a reference image does not always survive translation onto a human body. Skin curves. It folds. It stretches and contracts with movement. A design drawn flat on paper needs to be adapted with a thorough understanding of how it will read in three dimensions, at rest and in motion.
Highly detailed linework compressed into too small a space will blur together as the skin ages. Designs placed over joints, knuckles, fingers, and elbows fade faster and distort more dramatically than work on flatter surfaces, because those areas experience constant mechanical stress.
This is precisely why the tattoo industry background of NIXX's technicians shapes their approach to
fade-to-cover consultations. When a client wants to replace an existing piece with something new, understanding why the original placement didn't work is as important as knowing how much to fade it. A cover-up planned without that context often repeats the original problem.
The Concept That Didn't Age
Some tattoos are technically sound and still become scary over time. Not because the work deteriorated, but because the person did.
Trend-based tattoos follow a reliable arc. The design feels current and exciting at the moment of decision. Within a few years, it reads as dated. Within a decade, it signals a very specific cultural moment that the wearer has long since moved past. What was self-expression becomes a timestamp.
Name tattoos follow a different arc but often arrive at the same destination. They carry emotional weight that shifts as circumstances change. A name that once represented love or loyalty can come to represent something the wearer no longer wishes to carry.
Neither of these makes the person foolish. Tastes change. Relationships change. Identity changes. The only problem is permanence, and that problem has a solution.
The Scratcher Work
This is the category that generates the most anxiety among our technicians, because it carries real health implications beyond the aesthetic.
An unlicensed tattoo artist working without professional equipment or a sterile environment, sometimes called a "scratcher" in the tattoo community, can cause damage that extends well beyond the visual. Improper needle depth, contaminated ink, and unsanitary conditions pose risks of infection, scarring, and uneven ink distribution that are not only unsightly but can also complicate laser removal.
In British Columbia, tattooing is regulated under the BC Immunization Program, and tattoo studios are subject to
health and safety inspection requirements outlined by the BC Centre for Disease Control. Work done outside of that framework carries risks that go beyond what shows up in photos.
The Point of View We Want to Share
Most "bad tattoo" content is written for entertainment. It mocks the person wearing the tattoo. It treats dissatisfaction as a punchline.
That is not the spirit of this contest, and it is not how we work.
Every tattoo has a story. Some of those stories are funny in hindsight. Some are genuinely painful. Some are simply the record of a younger version of yourself that you've outgrown. None of those are reasons to be embarrassed about wanting to move forward.
The scariest tattoo isn't a category of image. It's the one that makes you feel stuck. The one that holds you back from wearing what you want, pursuing the career you want, or just feeling at home in your own skin.
That's what laser removal addresses. Not a cosmetic vanity. A practical barrier to feeling like yourself.
To better understand what the removal process involves and what to expect along the way, our posts on
how many sessions laser tattoo removal takes and
does laser tattoo removal hurt are good places to start.

6. Finalist Selection and Public Vote. This is a contest of skill, not a random draw. The winner is chosen in two stages.
Stage 1: Finalists. A panel of NIXX staff will judge all eligible entries on the following criteria:
- Fright factor of the tattoo, in the spirit of Halloween (50%)
- Creativity and storytelling of the written entry (50%)
The three (3) highest-scoring entries will be named finalists. The judges' decisions are final.
Stage 2:
Public vote. NIXX will share the three finalists' photos and stories on Instagram, and the public will vote for their favourite through an Instagram Story poll during the voting period listed in Section 2. Each Instagram account may vote once. The finalist with the most votes at the close of voting wins, subject to the conditions in Section 8.
In the event of a tie in the public vote, the finalist with the higher Stage 1 score wins.
Fair voting.
Finalists may invite friends and followers to vote. Votes from fake or automated accounts, purchased votes, or any other attempt to manipulate the results will not be counted, and NIXX may disqualify any finalist involved. NIXX's vote count is final.
Finalist consent.
Before the vote, each finalist will be contacted by Direct Message and asked to confirm that their photo and story may be shared publicly for voting. This applies to entries submitted by Direct Message as well. If a finalist does not confirm within 24 hours or prefers not to be shared, NIXX will select the next highest-scoring entry as a finalist.
7. Prize. One (1) winner will receive:
- One (1) free consultation; and
- One (1) free laser tattoo removal session on a single tattoo measuring no more than 5 inches x 5 inches (12.7 cm x 12.7 cm)
The prize applies only to the tattoo shown in the winning entry. It has no cash value and cannot be transferred, sold, exchanged for cash, or applied to a different tattoo or a different person. Any additional sessions are the winner's responsibility at NIXX's regular pricing. No substitutions, except that NIXX may substitute a prize of equal or greater value if necessary. Treatment may be performed by any NIXX technician, at NIXX's discretion.
8. Winner Notification and Claiming the Prize.
The winner will be contacted by Instagram Direct Message within 48 hours of the winner announcement.
To claim the prize, the winner must:
- Reply within 7 days of being contacted.
- Correctly answer a time-limited, mathematical skill-testing question without assistance.
- Sign a declaration and release form confirming eligibility and acceptance of these rules.
- Schedule their consultation and prize session on or before December 15, 2026.
If NIXX advises a different treatment date for skin health reasons, NIXX may extend this deadline at its discretion. A prize appointment that is not scheduled by December 15, 2026, will be forfeited.
If the winner cannot be reached, does not meet these requirements, or declines the prize, the prize will go to the finalist with the next highest number of public votes.
9. Suitability for Treatment. All treatment is subject to a consultation and assessment by a NIXX technician. If the technician determines that the tattoo or the winner's skin is not suitable for treatment at this time, or that the tattoo exceeds the 5" x 5" size limit, NIXX may offer a later treatment date or award the prize to the finalist with the next highest number of public votes. The winner must complete NIXX's standard intake and consent forms before treatment. Results vary from person to person, and no specific outcome is promised.
10. Photos and Publicity.
By entering, you give NIXX permission to repost your entry photo and story on NIXX's social media channels and website, with credit to your Instagram handle, in connection with this Contest.
As a condition of accepting the prize, the winner agrees to have before-and-after photos taken of the treated area and to allow NIXX to use them, along with the winner's first name or Instagram handle, in NIXX marketing without further compensation.
